Description:
Frustules and valves typically linear with bluntly rounded to acute ends, sometimes widened towards the ends to form weakly clavate apices; keel very distinct, broad, with fibulae (3-5 in 10µm) of irregular length extending across the valve, but not reaching the opposite side; transapical striae distinctly punctate; length is 150-820µm, breadth is 18-26µm; striae count is 9-10 in 10µm; Krammer & Lange-Bertalot (1991) give lower length and breadth values (150µm and 13µm, respectively) for this species; keel is described to be eccentric, and striae count can reach as high as 13 in 10µm
