The Periphyton Group at Florida International University created and maintains the Diatom Image Database, which includes over 980 diatom taxa found in the greater Everglades region of south Florida. Description:
Valve is elliptical to round; central field is unevenly bordered, often stretched in a bipolar fashion and waved tangentially, and is roughly dotted (colliculate structure); margin of valve face is radially bordered in an uneven manner, with long and short grooves that are sometimes dividing (in smaller elliptical valves, the grooves may seem equally long); diameter is 8-50µm
