Frustules are linear in girdle view; valve is linear, usually slightly arched, somewhat swollen to form more or less capitate ends; width of valve at the ends is usually a little greater than at centre; terminal nodules are very distinct and are at or near the very ends of ventral margin of valve; raphe appendage extends towards the valve centre from dorsal margin of terminal nodules; jelly pore present at one apex of valve; striae are equidistant, indistinctly punctate; length is 80-300µm, breadth is 2-5µm; striae count usually 15-19 in 10µm (Hustedt [1932] states that striae are 14-18 in 10µm; Cleve-Euler [1953] contends that striae are distinctly punctate, about 11-20 in 10µm, with valve length 80-300µm, breadth 1.5-8µm)
