As the tide ebbs, fishes retreat into a subtidal refuge cleared when the tide has fallen. Three replicate nets have been sampled at 3 locations along a salinity gradient on Shark River for 4 years. Small resident forage fish and grass shrimp dominate the collections. Exotic species and estuarine transient species that use the estuary as a nursery are rare within the assemblage of fishes that routinely use the flooded forest. Geographic Coverage Study Extent Description The Study Extent of this dataset includes the Shark River research sites within Everglades National Park, South Florida Bounding Coordinates Geographic description: Data were collected at 3 locations along a salinity gradient on Shark River, within Everglades National Park, South Florida West bounding coordinate: -81.077 East bounding coordinate: -80.968 North bounding coordinate: 25.424 South bounding coordinate: 25.365 Geographic description: Florida Coastal Everglades LTER Study Area: South Florida, Everglades National Park, and Florida Bay West bounding coordinate: -81.078 East bounding coordinate: -80.490 North bounding coordinate: 25.761 South bounding coordinate: 24.913 All Sites Geographic Description:SRSMc-S2 Longitude:-80.968 Latitude:25.409 Geographic Description:SRSMc-S3 Longitude:-81.077 Latitude:25.365 Geographic Description:SRSMc-S4 Longitude:-81.060 Latitude:25.424 Temporal Coverage Start Date: 2000-03-10 End Date: 2004-04-07 Data Table Entity Name: LT_TDCS_McIvor_001 Entity Description: Global Climate Change Impacts on the Vegetation and Fauna of Mangrove Forested Ecosystems in Florida (FCE): Nekton Mass from March 2000 to April 2004 Object Name: LT_TDCS_McIvor_001 Data Format Number of Header Lines: 1 Attribute Orientation: column Field Delimiter: , Number of Records: Attributes Attribute Name: SITENAME Attribute Label: sitename Attribute Definition: Name of Collection Site Storage Type: text Measurement Scale: Name of Collection Site Missing Value Code: Attribute Name: Net_Number Attribute Label: ID Number Attribute Definition: Net ID Number Storage Type: ordinal Measurement Scale: Net ID Number Missing Value Code: Attribute Name: Date Attribute Label: date Attribute Definition: Sample Collection date Storage Type: datetime Measurement Scale: Missing Value Code: Attribute Name: SpeciesName Attribute Label: species Attribute Definition: Nekton Species Name Storage Type: text Measurement Scale: Nekton Species Name Missing Value Code: -9999 (Value will never be recorded ) Attribute Name: Nekton_mass Attribute Label: mass Attribute Definition: Nekton Mass Storage Type: data Measurement Scale: Units: gram Precision: 0.01 Number Type: real Missing Value Code: -9999.00 (Value will never be recorded ) Attribute Name: Nekton_number Attribute Label: count Attribute Definition: Nekton Count Storage Type: data Measurement Scale: Units: dimensionless Precision: 1 Number Type: real Missing Value Code: -9999 (Value will never be recorded ) Methods Sampling Description 3 sites, one up-river (SRSMc-S2), one mid-river (SRSMc-S4), and one down-river (SRSMc-S3), with 3 nets at each site. Three permanent plots per site, nets folded into aluminum trenches set in the forest floor and deployed remotely from boardwalks. Sampled every two months (ideally), on the highest tides for that month (full moon or new moon). Method Step Description 2 x 3 m2 bottomless lift nets (Rozas 1992, Bottomless lift net for sampling nekton on intertidal marshes. Mar Ecol Prog Ser 89: 287-92.); K-S test for length-frequency dist., RM ANOVA for site differences Instrumentation YSI Meter model NUM 85/10 Quality Control Final validation when necessary done on identifications by ichthyological taxonomist specialist Dr. Ed Matheson, FMRI. Electronic files are checked against raw data; all specimens archived; reliance on all available expertise within lab.
