These short shoots were returned to the lab, where all attached green leaves were cut from the short shoots and cleaned of adhering epiphytes by gently scraping with a razor blade. All leaves from a site were pooled and dried at 80degrees C. Dried leaves were ground to a fine powder using a ceramic mortar and pestle. Powdered samples were analyzed for 15N and 13C at the SERC Stable Isotope Laboratory at Florida International University using standard elemental analyzer isotope ratio mass spectrometer (EA-IRMS) procedures. Standards are Peedee Belemnite (PDB) for carbon and air (AIR) for nitrogen. This dataset replaces all previous versions of LT_PP_Fourqurean_004, LT_PP_Fourqurean_014 and LT_PP_Fourqurean_015 as the dataset were combined into LT_PP_Fourqurean_003 to facilitate data usability. The FCE program is discontinuing its practice of versioning data as of March 2013.
