Dataset AbstractThis project was established in 2006 to document the pattern of abundance of key ecological indicators (e.g., surface water, soil, floc, periphyton and sawgrass) across the NESRS landscape (Gaiser et al. 2009). A total of 30 sites were established and monitored in 2006, 2007 and 2008 . After the completion of 1-mile bridge in 2012, additional 10 new sites were established to observe the ecological impact of 1-mile bridge ( Known as Bridge & Census sites). In 2015, additional 40 sites were established along eight transects (T1-T8, known as near canal sites) in ENP marshes starting at, and roughly perpendicular to the L-29 canal. The purpose of these sites was to monitor the potential effects of Modified Water Deliveries (MWD) operations on changing nutrient concentrations and ratios in key ecological compartments due to increased downstream discharges from the L-29 canal beneath the 1-mile and 2.6-mile bridges and culverts along Tamiami Trail.

Description
Samples were collected during wet (September-November) and dry seasons (March-May) from 2006 to 2019. Nitrile gloves were worn during sample collection, bottles were rinsed with surface water 3 times. Surface water samples were collected once at each site when water was present. At each site a quadrat was thrown in three random locations to total three replicates for all other measurements. Time was recorded after each quadrat throw. Three replicate samples (triplicates) of soil, floc, sawgrass, and periphyton (if present) were collected from each site. Water quality was measured and recorded in situ using a YSI Professional Plus ( e.g., pH, conductivity, DO, and temperature). Canopy height, water and soil depth were measured using meter stick and soil probe at each location.
Approximately 500 mL of unfiltered surface water was collected from mid-depth in the water column (lower boundary floc/water interface, upper boundary water/air interface) at each location according to South Florida Water management District (SFWMD) sampling protocols.
Soil and the overlying floc were sampled using intact coring. Soil cores were collected by inserting a plastic tube of known diameter (surface area 1 m2) through the floc and into the soil. Once collected, the cores were separated into the floc (single measured depth increment) and the 0-2 cm, and 2-10 cm soil depth increments. To characterize background conditions, the 0-2 and 2-10 cm were individually analyzed and then proportionately combined to create a 0-10 cm increment to compare to other studies that typically use a surficial 0-10 cm soil core (e.g., REMAP USEPA; Osborne et al. 2011). Soil type (marl, peat, rock) is observed per core and recorded.
Total periphyton aerial cover and water surface with floating periphyton were recorded as a percentage. A 2000 ml graduated cylinder was then used to measure total periphyton + submersed total biovolume (ml); periphyton biovolume was recorded separately (ml); benthic of sample, sweaters of sample, and floating of sample were all recorded as a percentage. About 120 mL of periphyton was collected from each site when present; however, periphyton was mostly absent during the dry season and at sites closest to the Tamiami Canal. When no periphyton was present, a small grab sample of debris and detritus was collected from the sediment surface. Periphyton mat type was observed per sample and recorded. Species name and relative percentages were recorded for the 4 most common periphyton associated macrophytes. The three most dominant plant species covered in calcareous sweaters were recorded. The two most dominant submersed macrophyte species covered by periphyton were recorded.
Plant cover (approximate density of all live and dead emergent stems) at each location was recorded as a percentage. Live and dead plant counts (emergent stems) were taken for the following species, Cladium jamaicense, Crinum americanum, Eleocharis cellulose, Eleocharis elongate, Panicum hemitomon, Pontederia cordata, Rhynchospora tracii, Sagittaria lancifolia, and Typha dominguense. Three leaves of sawgrass were collected per location and placed in a brown paper bag when present. All collected surface water, soil, floc, periphyton, and vegetation samples were packed in pre-labeled plastic bottles or tubes and shipped on ice in coolers to SFWMD on the same day of sample collection for analyses.
FIU's CAChE Nutrient Core Facility and the SFWMD labs are NELAC Certified for non-potable water-General Chemistry under State Lab ID E76930 (FIU) and E46077 (SFWMD). For water samples, TP was analyzed following Solorzano and Sharp (1980), and TN was measured with an Antek TN analyzer (Antek Instruments, Houston, Texas, USA), and TC and TOC were analyzed by using a Shimadzu TOC Analyzer (Shimadzu Corporation, Columbia, Maryland, USA).
Total carbon and TN of oven-dried floc, periphyton, sawgrass, and soil samples were analyzed by the high-temperature dry combustion method using a Carlo-Erba NA-1500 CNS Analyzer (Nelson and Sommers 1996). Determination of TP was done by oxidation (dry combustion) and hydrolysis of the P-containing compounds in the sample to soluble forms (soluble reactive, ortho-P; SRP) using MgSO4/H2SO4 and HCl (Solórzano and Sharp 1980), and then followed by standard colorimetric analysis of the resultant SRP (USEPA 1996, method 365.1).
