Dataset AbstractThis project was established in 2006 to document the pattern of abundance of key ecological indicators (e.g., surface water, soil, floc, periphyton and sawgrass) across the NESRS landscape (Gaiser et al. 2009). A total of 30 sites were established and monitored in 2006, 2007 and 2008 .After the completion of 1-mile bridge in 2012, additional 10 new sites were established to observe the ecological impact of 1-mile bridge ( Known as Bridge & Census sites). In 2015, additional 40 sites were established along eight transects (T1-T8, known as near canal sites) in ENP marshes starting at, and roughly perpendicular to the L-29 canal. The purpose of these sites was to monitor the potential effects of Modified Water Deliveries (MWD) operations on changing nutrient concentrations and ratios in key ecological compartments due to increased downstream discharges from the L-29 canal beneath the 1-mile and 2.6-mile bridges and culverts along Tamiami Trail.

Description
Samples were collected during wet (September-November) and dry seasons (March-May) from 2006 to 2018. Surface water samples were collected at each site when water was present. By using YSI, physical characteristics ( e.g., pH, conductivity, DO, and temperature) were measured in the field and recorded. Water depth were measured by using meter stick at each locations. Approximately 500 mL of unfiltered surface water was collected from mid-depth in the water column (lower boundary floc/water interface, upper boundary water/air interface) at each location according to South Florida Water management District (SFWMD) sampling protocols. Water samples were stored on ice until returned to the lab. We sampled the soil and the overlying floc using intact coring Three replicate samples (triplicates) of soils and floc (if present) were collected from each location. Cores were collected by inserting a plastic tube of known diameter (surface area 1 m2) through the floc and into the soil. Once collected, the cores were separated into the floc (single measured depth increment) and the 0-2 cm, and 2-10 cm soil depth increments. To characterize background conditions, the 0-2 and 2-10 cm were individually analyzed and then proportionately combined to create a 0-10 cm increment to compare to other studies that typically use a surficial 0-10 cm soil core (e.g., REMAP USEPA; Osborne et al. 2011). About 120 mL of periphyton was collected from each site when present; however, periphyton was mostly absent during the dry season and at sites closest to the Tamiami Canal. Periphyton samples were stored in labeled, sealed bags (Whirl-Pak or equivalent) and immediately placed on ice until returned to the lab. Three leaves of vegetation tissues (sawgrass) were collected in brown paper bags from each site when present. Three replicate (triplicates) sawgrass samples (if present) were collected from each location. All collected surface water, soil, floc, periphyton, and vegetation samples were packed in pre-labeled plastic bottles or tubes and shipped on ice in coolers to SFWMD on the same day of sample collection for analyses. The detailed sample processing was found in SFWMD websites (www.sfwmd.gov). High temperature combustion and digestion were used to measure surface water TP, TOC, and TN.

Florida International University maintains strict Quality Assurance and Quality Control procedures. Calibration curves are analyzed and summarized at the beginning of all analytical runs according to method specification. Standards, either citrus or apple leaves, are digested or combusted for all TP and TN/TC analysis. All standards are accepted within the analytical range as defined by the National Bureau of Standards (NBS). Analytical duplicate samples are analyzed (10% of total samples) in all analysis runs. Acceptable duplicate analysis is ± 15% relative percent difference (RPD). Matrix spikes are analyzed at 5% of total samples in all analytical runs and are accepted at ± 20% recovery. Additionally, analytical blanks are (5% of total samples) analyzed in all runs. All QA/QC results are included with combined data file. The Southeast Environmental Research Center within the Institute of Water and Environment at FIU utilized Chain of Custody forms to insure all samples and analysis are accounted for and tracked
Added by Dave Rudnick on 2020-04-13: Samples from bridge and census sites were processed by FIU’s Center for Aquatic Chemistry and Environment Nutrient Core Facility with an additional 10% of sites where duplicate samples (for QA/QC) were collected and processed by the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD), and samples from near-canal sites were processed by the SFWMD with an additional 10% of sites where duplicate samples were processed by FIU. Both FIU and SFWMD analytical labs follow strict internal and external QA assurance practices and are NELAC Certified for non-potable water-General Chemistry under State Lab ID E76930 (FIU) and E46077 (SFWMD).
