Dataset AbstractThree random soil cores are collected once a year from TS/Ph 1b, 2, 3, 4, 5, & 6b. The collection of these soil cores is in the dry season (Dec.-May). The top 10cm of soil is collected using a soil core. The soil is then analyzed to obtain its bulk density, organic matter content, TC, TN, and TP.

MethodsSampling Description
Three random soil cores were collected from each site. Samples were stored in a freezer until analyzed. The top 10cm of soil were used for analysis. A subsample of 10cm3 of soil was weighed and then placed in an oven at 70oC until a constant weight was obtained. The dry weight of the soil was divided by 10 to obtain soil bulk density. Then this soil was burned in a furnace for 3 hours at 500oC to obtain the soil's ash weight. Another subsample of soil was dried for 72 hours and used for soil nutrient analysis. Between 4 and 7 mg of soil was weighed into tin cups, folded, and placed into the Carlo Erba elemental analyzer to obtain soil TN and TC. Another 17 to 21 mg of soil was weighed into empty 25 mL vials and analyzed for TP following Sharp and Solorzano (1980).

Data that already meets Lab QA/QC is then evaluated by a Field Technician for patterns and trends, and finally by the PI for patterns and trends. When looking at patterns and trends, the Field Technician and/or PI looks for any values that "spike" or "valley" with an above/below quanity greater than double preceding and post values.
